Natural disasters

In the event of a natural disaster such as an earthquake or flood, local infrastructures are disrupted and, depending on the current epidemiology of a disease within the country or region affected, the risk of outbreaks of infectious disease may be increased. Those planning to visit affected areas, either to provide assistance as part of a relief organisation or to visit family, should be aware of possible hazards and the increased risk of injury and illnesses.

The National Travel Health Network and Centre provides advice about any health issues that may be important for those visiting affected areas. The Health Protection Agency provides advice for health professionals who may see and treat travellers returning from affected areas. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office website should always be consulted prior to planning travel to areas affected by natural disasters to assess safety at the destination and whether there are any travel restrictions. You should only plan to travel to an area affected by a natural disaster to assist if you are part of an official relief organisation.
