Mosquito Recording Scheme

The Mosquito Recording Scheme aims to better understand the distribution and ecology of mosquitoes in Britain.

The scheme is co-ordinated by the Medical Entomology and Zoonoses Ecology Group (MEZE) at the Health Protection Agency.

Why are we collecting mosquitoes?

This project aims to collate and enhance existing data on the distribution of all British mosquitoes in order to fill the gaps in our current understanding of mosquito distributions and to encourage the sharing of up-to-date distribution data. This will improve our understanding of the public health risk posed by mosquitoes and mosquito-borne infections. At the current time, the mosquito recording scheme does not test mosquitoes for any pathogens they may carry.

Individuals and groups are invited to assist in the development of the database on mosquito distributions by sending in any mosquitoes collected, along with details of:

  • date of collection
  • specific location (grid reference)
  • general location (nearest town/village)
  • local habitat (e.g. woodland, pasture)
  • contact details of the individual sending in the sample

How to send mosquitoes

Please download and complete the form below and send along with any mosquitoes collected to the address at the bottom of the page.

Mosquito Recording Form (Word Document, 34 KB)

  • If more than one mosquito is collected from different habitats/locations they should be placed in separate labelled containers.
  • If more than one mosquito is collected from the same habitat on the same day, they may be sent in one container.
  • Live mosquitoes should be placed in a container and put in the freezer for 10 minutes in order to kill them.
  • They should then be sent as soon as possible to the address below, together with the completed data form.
  • Please send any mosquitoes collected in a crush-proof, plastic container (e.g. an old camera film case, or alternatively plastic vials can be supplied on request to the address or email below).
  • All specimens sent in will be identified, and thus provide regular updates for the Biological Records Centre.
