The aim of this guidance is to support public health practitioners in identifying the sources of typhoid or paratyphoid infection, and reduce the risks of secondary transmission. This guidance is destined to be used in conjunction with the accompanying template letter/fact sheet and the enteric fever enhanced surveillance questionnaire.
To better understand the epidemiology of both travel-associated and non-travel-associated enteric fever and to assess its impact on the UK more accurately, an active national surveillance scheme for enteric fever in England, Wales and Northern Ireland is in place.
