The 2011/12 Seasonal Influenza Vaccine Uptake Programme

Recommendations made by the Department of Health (DH) for winter season 2011/12 have been published; please refer to the CMO Letter dated 25th May 2011 Influenza Immunisation Programme 2011/12 . This letter contains information about the annual seasonal influenza immunisation programme for winter 2011/12, including influenza immunisation for frontline health and social care staff.

Also updated is chapter 19 on Influenza in the Green Book (Immunisation Against Infectious Diseases) last published 16 September 2011.

2010/11 Results

At the end of the winter season 2010/11, vaccine uptake data in GP patient groups showed that overall 72.8% of people aged 65 years or over had been vaccinated (cumulative data covering seasonal flu doses administered from 1st September 2010 to end of 28th February 2011). Vaccine uptake data for patients aged 6 months to under 65 years in a clinical at-risk group showed a slight decrease from 51.6% last season to 50.4% this year. The response rate from all 151 Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) increased from 93.0% to 97.7% (8084/8278 GP practices responding).

Vaccine uptake data was also collected in pregnant women for the first time this season. Results showed that for 'healthy' pregnant women (ie those not in a clinical at-risk group) uptake reached 36.6%. For pregnant women at-risk, vaccine uptake was 56.6%.

The seasonal influenza vaccine uptake annual report for winter season 2010/11 written by the HPA (authors Fateha Begum and Dr Richard Pebody) on behalf of DH, covering the GP Patient survey was published on 6 September 2011 on the DH website. Data was also collected on the uptake of seasonal influenza vaccine among Frontline healthcare workers (HCWs) in all NHS Trusts. All 388 Trusts provided data on vaccinations up to 28th February 2011. Overall vaccine uptake amongst HCWs was 34.7% compared with 26.4% for season 2009/10 (seasonal flu vaccine only). 2009/10 Results

At the end of the winter season 2009/10, vaccine uptake data showed that overall 72.4% of people aged 65 years or over had been vaccinated. The response rate decreased from 96.2% to 93.0% (7797/8380 GP practices responding).

Vaccine uptake data was also collected for patients aged 6 months to under 65 years in a clinical risk group and showed an increase from 47.1% last season to 51.6% this year.

Data reporting on vaccine uptake shown at PCT and SHA level, and by clinical risk group and age, has been published in the Annual Report for season 2009/10. In 2009/10 a survey was also conducted on the uptake of pandemic H1N1 vaccine among priority groups: this included those in the usual seasonal influenza clinical risk groups (all ages), pregnant women, and healthy children aged six months to under five years. 87.4% (7333/8392) of GP practices in England provided data on H1N1 vaccinations administered up to 31 March 2010. The overall national vaccine uptake in clinical risk groups (all ages, including pregnant women) was 37.6%. The Pandemic H1N1 (Swine) Influenza Vaccine Uptake amongst Patient Groups in Primary Care in England 2009/10 report describes the results of the survey by priority/risk group and age band, as well as by national, regional, and local level.

Data were also collected on the uptake of seasonal influenza vaccine and pandemic H1N1 vaccine among Healthcare workers (HCWs) in all NHS Trusts. All 389 Trusts provided data on vaccinations up to 31 March 2010. Overall pandemic H1N1 vaccine uptake amongst HCWs was 40.3%, whilst seasonal influenza vaccine uptake was 26.4%. At the end of the winter season 2008/09, vaccine uptake data showed that overall 74.1% of people aged 65 years or over had been vaccinated. The response rate increased from 95.4% to 96.2% (7980/8293 GP practices responding).

Vaccine uptake data was also collected for patients aged 6 months to under 65 years in a clinical risk group and showed an increase from 45.3% last season to 47.1% this year.

At the end of the winter season 2007/08, vaccine uptake data showed that overall 73.5% of people aged 65 years or over had been vaccinated. The response rate increased from 92.9% to 95.4% (7988/8375 GP practices responding).

Vaccine uptake data was also collected for patients aged 6 months to under 65 years at risk and showed an increase from 42.1% last season to 45.3% this year.
