Further information
The principles for accessing, storing and sharing GUMCAD data are given in
GUMCAD and HIV Data Sharing Policy (PDF, 150 KB). The dataset can be accessed in the following ways:
1. Tables published on the HPA website. These present data on diagnoses of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and related service provision at PCT, SHA and national level. Data are also presented in a standard STI slide set.
2. GUMCAD reporting tools. These can be used to generate data reports for monitoring local, regional and national public health priorities. The reports, which are available on the HIV & STI Web Portal, are restricted for use by nominated government, NHS and public health organisations. A description of the restricted access data reports which are or will soon be available is given in the
GUMCAD Automated Report Specification (PDF, 330 KB).
3. Sexual Health Profiles. These use interactive InstantAtlas®6 mapping tools to present data on key sexual health information at PCT, SHA and national level.
1. Guidance to clinic staff. A comprehensive guidance for clinic staff on the recording, collection and transmission of GUMCAD data to the HPA updated with the new SHHAPT codes. The guidance was developed by HPA and BASHH.
GUMCAD Guidance to clinic staff (V12) (PDF, 1.6 MB)
2. Code quick reference guide. A guide to the Sexual Health and HIV Activity Property Type (SHHAPT) codes, previously known as KC60 codes, for use by clinic staff responsible for coding data.
SHHAPT (KC60) Code Look-up (PDF, 61 KB)
3. KC60 revision. A detailed specification and rationale for revising the KC60 codes, now known as Sexual Health and HIV Activity Property Type (SHHAPT) codes.
Specification of revisions to KC60 (SHHAPT) codes (PDF, 200 KB)
4. GUMCAD extract specifications. Technical guidance and specifications for GUMCAD for information systems managers and software providers.
GUMCAD extract specification (PDF, 330 KB)

GUMCAD has been piloted in ESHSs, services providing comprehensive STI management outside of the traditional GUM setting, through the GUMCAD2 project. The pilot examined the feasibility and acceptability of rolling out GUMCAD to these services to improve STI surveillance in order to better estimate the burden of sexual ill health in the population, and the impact of changes in service delivery. It demonstrated that all fields are already or can easily be recorded in clinic software, can be sent to the HPA in electronic format and are implementable, interoperable, safe, acceptable and fit for purpose.
Conditional approval was received from the Information Standards Board and an Advanced Notification (AN) issued to all clinics and their software providers in November 2010. Full approval has now been received and an Information Standards Notice (ISN) will be issued by the end of July 2011. All ESHSs should be collecting GUMCAD2 by 1st January 2012.

The Sexual and Reproductive Health Activity Dataset (SRHAD) has been developed to replace the KT31 return by the DH to capture contraception and other sexual and reproductive health activities. SRHAD, together with GUMCAD and GUMCAD2 will form the basis for a standardised sexual health dataset collected from clinic settings across England. Further details on SRHAD are available at: http://www.ic.nhs.uk/services/omnibus-survey/using-the-service/data-collections/sexual-and-reproductive-health-activity-dataset-srhad
