The reports primarily relate to surveillance of farmed animal species and are compiled using data gathered by the network of regional laboratories. Non-statutory zoonoses comprise the foodborne zoonoses (other than salmonella) and most of the miscellaneous environmental zoonoses.

Annual Zoonoses Reports have been published since 1998. The reports pull together data on the prevalence of zoonotic infections in humans, animals and food, and are compiled by Defra, the VLA, the HPA, and NPHS Wales.

These reports contain information on trends and sources of zoonoses and zoonotic agents in the UK. . The information covers the occurrence of these diseases and agents in humans, animals, foodstuffs and in some cases also in feedingstuffs. The information given covers both zoonoses that are important for the public health in the whole European Community, as well as zoonoses which are relevant on the basis of the national epidemiological situation.
