Scottish Parliament Transport and the Environment Committee. Report on Inquiry Into the Proposals to Introduce New Planning Procedures for Telecommunications Developments (29 March 2000)

29 March 2000

NRPB welcomes this report [1] as a significant contribution to the debate on issues raised by mobile phone technology.

Much of the report is concerned with planning matters related to mobile phone masts on which it would be inappropriate for NRPB to comment. We note the Committee's recommendations on the precautionary principle, and their view that the UK should adopt guidelines on exposures recommended by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP).

This report, along with the report from the Science and Technology Committee on Mobile Phones and Health (September 1999) [2], will provide a constructive input into the development of advice on this issue. We look forward to the forthcoming report from the Independent Expert Group on Mobile Phones [3] which is due to be published in May 2000.
