Meningococcal disease

Meningococcal meningitis and meningococcal septicaemia are systemic infections caused by the bacteria Neisseria meningitidis.

  • Meningitis: inflammation of meninges (lining of the brain)
  • Septicaemia: bacteria enters the bloodstream resulting in blood poisoning
