Real-time Syndromic Surveillance

Syndromic surveillance map of England

Syndromic Surveillance is the real-time (or near real-time) collection, analysis, interpretation and dissemination of health-related data to enable the early identification of the impact (or absence of impact) of potential human or veterinary public-health threats which require effective public health action.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) Real-time Syndromic Surveillance Team (ReSST) co-ordinate several national syndromic systems and produce routine syndromic surveillance bulletins and reports. Further information on each of these systems, and the latest available surveillance data are available on these web pages.

  •  Launch of new syndromic surveillance schemes – Preparing for the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympic Games

The Emergency Department Syndromic Surveillance System (EDSSS) is a new syndromic surveillance scheme which has been developed by the HPA in collaboration with the College of Emergency Medicine. This national sentinel surveillance system monitors daily emergency department (ED) attendances in England for key morbidities.

The GP Out of Hours/ Unscheduled Care Syndromic Surveillance System (GPOOHSS) is a newly developed scheme which monitors general practitioner consultations for key morbidities outside of normal working hours and unplanned contacts within NHS primary care.

The HPA has developed these new surveillance schemes as part of its preparation for the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympic Games. There is a requirement for enhanced surveillance to ensure that any incidents with potential public health implications are recognised early and monitored closely. The schemes will remain a legacy of the Games, providing health benefit for years to come.
