Laser Safety

General (Scheduled) Laser Safety Courses

The HPA and Loughborough University have combined their extensive experience of radiological protection and laser safety research to offer a comprehensive range of training courses in laser safety. These courses provide effective training to personnel working in all laser applications.

The aims are:

  • to provide a balanced view of the risks associated with working with lasers
  • to provide knowledge of current laser technologies and applications
  • to give practical experience of identifying hazards associated with lasers
  • to give knowledge of practical measures for reducing laser related risks
  • to give knowledge of current safety standards and legislation
  • to provide a forum for discussion of laser safety practice and issues.

The laser safety training courses, held at Loughborough University, have arisen from pioneering research into laser safety since 1984. The courses are not concerned merely with the 'academic' issues of laser safety but offer delegates the expertise gained from dealing with practical laser engineering experiences and laser safety engineering. Our staff provide advice on laser safety across a wide range of applications. This background allows courses to be tailored to best meet delegates' needs. Once a place upon a course has been confirmed, delegates receive a questionnaire seeking laser safety requirements and background. This information is used to target the lecture and discussion materials to delegates' needs. Loughborough University and the HPA, jointly, can offer delegates the opportunity to share the expertise, resources and developments generated by the largest UK laser safety research team.
