Laser Safety Management Course

Aim

This five-day course provides delegates with the tools to implement a Laser Safety Management Programme for their laser application. This course also provides comprehensive training in support of the British Standards for laser safety and general safety legislation.

Attendance

The following should attend this course:

  • Laser Safety Officers dealing with changing or complex situations
  • trainee Laser Protection Advisers (successful completion of the course may provide adequate evidence of the knowledge aspects for Certification)
  • Safety Officers with additional responsibilities for laser safety
  • prospective Laser Safety Officers
  • trainers of others in the safe use of lasers
  • laser manufacturers and suppliers.

Course format

Each course is tailored to the interests of the course participants. A pre-attendance questionnaire is sent to delegates for completion and return prior to the course.

This is an active learning experience with comprehensive course material referencing to current British Standards. Course activities include case studies, practical measurement and assessment exercises, workshops, group tutorials and daily review questions, as well as a visit to the university's laser laboratory. All delegates will be provided with a set of comprehensive course notes and an attendance certificate. An optional written test is conducted at the end of the course. Delegates who pass the written test receive appropriate recognition on their attendance certificate.

Course presenters

The course is usually delivered by four senior staff from the HPA Centre for Radiation, Chemical and Environmental Hazards and Loughborough University.

Typical programme

Day 1

  • Ubiquitous laser and introduction to the Laser Safety Management Programme.
  • Introduction to laser risk assessment.
  • Laser application model (workshop).
  • Safety issues from lasers and the beam delivery system.

Day 2

  • Safety issues from the laser process, environment and people.
  • Safety issues from an application (workshop).
  • Laboratory tour.
  • Laser beam hazards.
  • Non-beam hazards.
  • Laser classification.

Day 3

  • Putting numbers to laser beam hazards.
  • Calculating MPE levels.
  • Legal requirements.
  • Laser beam measurements.

Day 4

  • Practical laser safety - personal protective equipment , administrative controls and engineering controls.
  • Written procedures (workshop).
  • Risk assessment (workshop).
  • Control measures (workshop).
  • Review of the Laser Safety Management Programme.

Day 5

  • Completion of the Laser Safety Management Programme.
  • Review and revision.
  • Feedback and course review.
  • Written test.

Venue

This course is fully residential and includes all meals and accommodation for its duration, from dinner on Sunday evening to lunch on Friday. It will be held at the imago at Burleigh Court Conference Centre, Loughborough, UK. The Conference Centre has recently undergone major refurbishment and the Burleigh Springs Leisure Complex, with indoor swimming pool, sauna, spa, gym and skin care/therapy centre, is available to delegates. Ample free car parking is provided.

Fee

The fee is £2050, which includes all accommodation and meals from Sunday evening to Friday afternoon.
