ASHT EU project logo Development of an alerting system for chemical health threats  – The activities of this programme of work relate to the development of an alerting system for the deliberate release of chemicals by developing procedures and mechanisms for poisons centres to participate in an alert system that will identify and rapidly disseminate information on outbreaks of illness caused by exposure to chemicals. It also aims to identify requirements for the development of a health surveillance system for poisonings.

DeNaMiC

 Description of the nature of the accidental misuse of chemicals and chemicals products DeNaMiC is an industry-funded project to determine if poisons centres data collection can be harmonised into a standard reporting format, and also to see if poisons centres are a feasible resource to aid risk asessment by collecting more detailed information on the circumstances involved in accidental poisonings and exposure to household chemical consumer products

Development of a Vaccine Against Neonatal Infections (DEVANI) logo

DEVANI (DEsign of a Vaccines Against Neonatal Infections)  DEVANI is a Commission Framework Seven project, launched on 1 January 2008.The main objectives are to provide information for the development of a vaccine against neonatal infections caused by group B streptococci (Streptococcus agalactiae ), toimprove epidemiological information, and to harmonise microbiological procedures for GBS diagnosis, screening and typing within eight participating European countries.

DIPNET

DIPNET: European Diphtheria Surveillance Network  DIPNET has been recognised as an DSN and continues the work from the feasibility study and the European Laboratory Working Group on Diphtheria (ELWGD), to establish, maintain and develop a network of epidemiological and microbiological expertise at European level for the prevention and control of diphtheria and other infections caused by toxigenic and non-toxigenic strains of Corynebacterium diphtheriae and Corynebacterium ulcerans.

The European ALARA Network (EAN).  EAN started in 1980, with the support of the European Commission.  It is now a self-sustaining network with 28 countries represented.  The Occupational Services Department (Radiation Protection) of CRCE is assistant co-ordinator of EAN and undertakes the role of network secretary.  The broad objectives of EAN are:

  • To promote radiation protection in Europe with particular emphasis on the optimisation principle (also know as ALARA - As Low As Reasonably Achievable)
  • To provide a focus and mechanism for the exchange and dissemination of information from practical radiation protection experience
  • To identify topics and issues of interest that may be addressed through European working groups, workshops or research projects.

Enter-net is an international surveillance network for human gastrointestinal infections which involves all 15 countries of the European Union, plus Switzerland and Norway

EUIBIS

European Union Invasive Bacterial Infections Surveillance (EU-IBIS) Network - EU-IBIS established surveillance networks for invasive Haemophilus influenzae and Neisseria meningitidis disease in the EU countries in 2000. The overall aims of the EU-IBIS networks are to improve epidemiological information and laboratory capacity to characterise isolates of these two invasive bacterial infections within the EU.

EURO-MOMO (European monitoring of excess mortality for public health action) is an EU-wide project whose aim is to develop and strengthen real-time mortality monitoring across Europe. This will enhance the management of serious public health risks such as pandemic influenza, heat waves and cold snaps.

European Working Group for Legionella Infections (EWGLI)  EWGLI was formed in 1986 by a group of epidemiologists and microbiologists who wished to promote collaborative work in this area. EWGLI now has 36 collaborating countries.

 Development of Generic Scenarios, alerting system and training modules relating to release of Chemicals by Terrorists - This EU funded project aims to deliver an alert system for chemical attacks to enable a) the rapid detection and identification of deliberate and suspect deliberate releases and events worldwide which are of health and security interest to EU countries  b) the early notification of EU countries of these events and threats; as well as c) the timely dissemination of relevant and supporting information to EU countries in order for them to prepare and develop contingency plans in a timely manner to similar incidents and anticipated threats.

 Mastering hOSpital Antimicrobial Resistance

is a European research network (Integrated Project) coordinated by Inserm (the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research) and supported by the European Commission under the Life Science Health Priority of the Sixth Framework Program.
MOSAR aims to integrate and coordinate the activities of physicians and scientists from 16 institutions in 9 European Member or Associated countries in order to combat the antimicrobial resistance of bacteria responsible for major and emerging nosocomial infections in hospitals.

Risk Assessment and Management - European Training Programme (Risk ASSETs)
The Risk ASSETs project is a DG SANCO funded project aiming at improving training in health risk assessment across Europe. The project will establish a structure to promote and facilitate health risk assessment training initiatives to ensure the availability of highly qualified health risk assessors throughout the Europe.
