Mumps notifications (confirmed cases), England and Wales, 1995 - 2009* by quarter
Following the Measles-Rubella (MR) school campaign in November 1994 the Health Protection Agency has offered oral fluid testing to confirm the diagnosis on all notified cases of measles, mumps and rubella. This is part of the enhanced surveillance programme for these vaccine-preventable diseases. The table below shows only the cases confirmed by oral fluid IgM antibody tests in each quarter compared to the number of notified cases. The notifications shown for 2005 exclude cases tested in the 15-24 year old age group. In February 2005 the Health Protection Agency recommended limiting oral fluid testing temporarily in people born between 1981 and 1986 as it is likely that virtually all cases in this age group are genuine mumps (CDR Weekly). Therefore the numbers confirmed by oral fluid testing would be artificially low if this age group was included.
