Environmental Policy

The Health Protection Agency's aim is to protect the health and well being of the UK population. We work to prevent and control the spread of infectious disease, reduce the adverse effects of chemical hazards, poisons and radiation, and prepare for potential or emerging threats to health.

The HPA recognises that care of the environment must be one of our core concerns. We are therefore dedicated to carrying out our activities in a manner that protects the environment and prevents pollution. This will be achieved by the implementation of a robust Environmental Management System, through which we will identify and implement environmentally responsible good practices and procedures with the aim of reducing the overall environmental impact of our activities.

Specifically we will:

  • Comply with applicable environmental legislation and relevant codes of practise.
  • Consider the environmental impact of policy decisions.
  • Develop and implement a formalised corporate environmental management system.
  • Set objectives and targets to drive continual improvement.
  • Develop a waste minimisation program that encourages the Reduction, Reuse or Recycling of viable products from all our waste streams.
  • Develop and adopt environmentally sound transport strategies.
  • Ensure that new developments comply with local and regional environmental plans by undertaking environmental impact assessments as an integral part our development strategy.
  • Ensure environmental concerns are considered when purchasing products or services.
  • Ensure that our suppliers and contractors demonstrate an acceptable standard of environmental performance.
  • Promote initiatives to reduce the amount of energy or natural resources used.
  • Train and inform all employees of their individual and collective environmental responsibilities.
  • Make appropriate resources available in order to ensure the success of this policy.

The HPA Board, supported by the Environmental Steering Group will be responsible for implementing and reviewing this policy and with overseeing the maintenance and improvement of the Agency's environmental performance.

This policy will be made available at all HPA business locations, on the company intranet and will be also publicly available to all interested parties.
