New HIV Diagnoses East of England 2011 Part 1 (PDF, 190 KB)
In 2010 as reported to end of June 2011, there were 445 new HIV diagnoses. The 2010 figure represents a 35% increase on the 329 new diagnoses in 2001. The overall UK increase since 2001 was 29%. Figures for 2010 are likely to rise as further reports are received. In 2010, an estimated 43% of newly diagnosed individuals acquired their infection heterosexually and were of black African ethnicity (UK average 31%) and 25% acquired their infection through sex between men and were of white ethnicity (UK average 37%). The East of England has the highest proportion (of new HIV diagnoses that are among black African individuals infected heterosexually.

There were 4,463 HIV diagnosed persons resident in the East of England who accessed HIV-related care in 2010. This SHA also had the highest proportion of individuals accessing care who were infected through heterosexual sex (68%; 3,002) and 27% (1,192) were infected through sex between men.
