New HIV Diagnoses East Midlands 2011 Part 1 (PDF, 147 KB)
In 2010, as reported to end of June 2011, there were 295 new HIV diagnoses. The 2010 figure represents a 50% increase on the 197 new diagnoses in 2001. The overall UK increase since 2001 was 29%. Figures for 2010 are likely to rise as further reports are received. In 2010, an estimated 40% of newly diagnosed individuals acquired their infection heterosexually and were of black African ethnicity (UK average 31%) and 27% acquired their infection through sex between men and were of white ethnicity (UK average 37%).

There were 3,142 HIV-diagnosed persons (all ages) resident in the East Midlands who accessed HIV-related care in 2010. Two-thirds (66%; 2,046) of these were individuals infected through heterosexual sex and more than a quarter (27%; 831) through sex between men.
