New Diagnoses of HIV

In 2010, as reported to end of June 2011, there were 305 new HIV diagnoses. The 2010 figure represents a 79% increase on the 170 new diagnoses in 2001. The overall UK increase since 2001 was 29%. Figures for 2010 are likely to rise as further reports are received. In 2010, an estimated 28% of newly diagnosed individuals acquired their infection heterosexually and were of black African ethnicity (UK average 31%) and 48% acquired their infection through sex between men and were of white ethnicity (UK average 37%).

There were 3,303 HIV diagnosed persons (all ages) resident in Scotland who accessed HIV-related care in 2010. This was an 8% increase from the number seen in 2009 (3,067). Overall, 42% (1,385) of individuals accessing care were infected through sex between men and 44% (1,428) were infected through heterosexual sex. Scotland has the highest proportion of individuals accessing care who were infected through injecting drug use (11%; 370).
