New HIV Diagnoses North East 2011 Part 1 (PDF, 179 KB)
In 2010, as reported to end of June 2011, there were 153 new HIV diagnoses. The 2010 figure represents a 173% increase on the 56 new diagnoses in 2001. The overall UK increase since 2001 was 29%. The North East reported the second highest proportional increase (highest Northern Ireland) from 2001. Figures for 2010 are likely to rise as further reports are received. In 2010, an estimated 27% of newly diagnosed individuals acquired their infection heterosexually and were of black African ethnicity (UK average 31%) and 41% acquired their infection through sex between men and were of white ethnicity (UK average 37%).

There were 1,305 HIV diagnosed persons (all ages) resident in the North East who accessed HIV-related care in 2010. Just over a half (52%; 657) of these were persons infected through heterosexual sex and 44% (552) were infected through sex between men.
