New HIV Diagnoses Yorkshire & The Humber 2011 Part 1 (PDF, 181 KB)
In 2010, as reported to end of June 2011, there were 397 new HIV diagnoses. The 2010 figure represents a 99% increase on the 199 new diagnoses in 2001. Figures for 2010 are likely to rise as further reports are received. Yorkshire and the Humber reported the second highest numerical increase (highest West Midlands) from 2001. The overall UK increase since 2001 was 29%. In 2010 an estimated 38% of newly diagnosed individuals acquired their infection heterosexually and were of black African ethnicity (UK average 31%) and 33% acquired their infection through sex between men and were of white ethnicity (UK average 37%).

There were 3,494 HIV diagnosed persons (all ages) resident in Yorkshire and The Humber who accessed HIV-related care in 2010. Two-thirds (64%; 2,204) of these were individuals infected through heterosexual sex and 30% (1,096) were infected through sex between men.
