New HIV Diagnoses West Midlands 2011 Part 1 (PDF, 152 KB)
In 2010, as reported to end of June 2011, there were 460 new HIV diagnoses. The 2010 figure represents a 104% increase on the 225 new diagnoses in 2001. The overall UK increase since 2001 was 29%. Figures for 2010 are likely to rise as further reports are received. In 2010, an estimated 34% of newly diagnosed individuals acquired their infection heterosexually and were of black African ethnicity (UK average 31%) and 32% acquired their infection through sex between men and were of white ethnicity (UK average 37%). The increase of 235 new diagnoses over this time period is the largest numerical increase seen in any UK area.

There were 4,523 HIV diagnosed persons (all ages) resident in the West Midlands who accessed HIV-related care in 2010. The West Midlands had the largest proportional increase in the number of residents accessing HIV-related care over the last decade (401%; from 903 in 2001). More than one-third (36%; 1,496) were infected through sex between men and 60% (2,501) were infected through heterosexual sex.
