New HIV Diagnoses South Central 2011 Part 1 (PDF, 148 KB)
In 2010, as reported to end of June 2011, there were 319 new HIV diagnoses. The 2010 figure represents a 21% increase on the 264 new diagnoses in 2001. The overall UK increase since 2001 was 29%. Figures for 2010 are likely to rise as further reports are received. In 2010, an estimated 42% of newly diagnosed individuals acquired their infection heterosexually and were of black African ethnicity (UK average 31%) and 33% acquired their infection through sex between men and were of white ethnicity (UK average 37%). The South Central has the second highest proportion (highest being the East of England) of new HIV diagnoses among black African individuals infected heterosexually.

There were 3,436 HIV diagnosed persons (all ages) resident in the South Central SHA who accessed HIV-related care in 2010. Two-thirds (65%: 2,148) of these were individuals infected through heterosexual sex and 30% (1,006) were infected through sex between men.
