This project seeks to provide an overview of the nature and extent of injury from chemicals and chemical products in the European region and detailed information on the circumstances in which exposure frequency take place.
This will involve identifying and assessing existing reporting systems and describing the different forms of risk management measures available to reduce the incidence of chemicals-related consumer injuries and assess the extent to which these have been evaluated. An appropriate information management structure will be proposed to collect, aggregate and describe the circumstances of exposure to consumer chemicals in the European region. The feasibility of harmonising and improving the reporting systems for collecting data and for evaluating the effectiveness of risk management measures will be studied by conducting a prospective multi-centre study.
The research will be focused to a large extent on poisons centre information resources and on how to integrate this information to gain a better understanding of consumer product poisoning. Poisons centres are well placed to collect product specific information and the circumstances of exposure to assess the likely severity, clinical management needs and likely outcomes of the exposure.
