Avian influenza situation in Egypt - 21 December 2009

On 21 December 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that the Ministry of Health of Egypt had reported a new confirmed human cases of avian influenza A(H5N1).

The case is a 21 year old female from the El Tanta District of Gharbia Governorate. She developed symptoms of fever and cough on 15 December 2009. She was admitted to Tanta Fever Hospital where she received oseltamivir treatment on the same day. She is in a stable condition. Investigation revealed that the case had close contact with dead poultry and was involved in slaughtering sick birds. The case was confirmed by the Egyptian Central Public Health Laboratories, a National Influenza Center of the WHO Global Influenza Surveillance Network (GISN).

Avian influenza situation in Cambodia - 18 December 2009

On 18 December 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that the Ministry of Health of Cambodia had reported a new confirmed human cases of avian influenza A(H5N1).

The 57-year-old male, from Ponhea Kreak District, Kampong Cham Province, developed symptoms on 11 December. The case was admitted to Kampong Cham Provincial Hospital on 16 December, where he received treatment. He is in a stable condition. The presence of the H5N1 virus was confirmed by the National Influenza Centre, the Institut Pasteur du Cambodge. A team led by the Ministry of Health is conducting field investigations into the source of his infection.

Of the 9 cases confirmed to date in Egypt, 7 have been fatal. This is the first diagnosed case in Cambodia during 2009. Further details can be obtained from the WHO situation report

Avian influenza situation in Viet Nam - 11 December 2009

On 11 December 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that the Ministry of Health of Viet Nam had reported a new confirmed human cases of avian influenza A(H5N1).

The case is a man from Dien Bien Phu city, Dien Bien Province. He developed symptoms on 18 November, was hospitalized at Dien Bien general hospital and died on 28 November 2009. The case has been confirmed at the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology (NIHE). The source of exposure is currently under investigation. His family keep some chickens and wild geese in their household.

Avian influenza situation in Egypt - 27 November 2009

On 27 November 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that the Ministry of Health of Egypt had reported a new confirmed human cases of avian influenza A(H5N1).

This case is a 3 year-old male from Minia Governorate. His symptoms started on 21 November 2009. He was admitted to hospital on 22 November and his condition is stable. Investigations into the source of infection indicated that the case had close contact with dead and/or sick poultry. The cases were confirmed by the Egyptian Central Public Health Laboratories.

Avian influenza situation in Egypt - 20 November 2009

On 20 November 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that the Ministry of Health of Egypt had reported a new confirmed human cases of avian influenza A(H5N1).

This case is a 21 year-old male from Sedy Beshir District, Alexandria Governorate. His symptoms started on 11 November. He was admitted to Maamoura Chest Hospital on 15 November, where he received oseltamivir treatment. The patient is in a stable condition. Investigations into the source of infection indicated that the case had close contact with dead and/or sick poultry and was involved in slaughtering sick birds. The cases were confirmed by the Egyptian Central Public Health Laboratories.

Avian influenza situation in Egypt - 24 September 2009

On 24 September 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that the Ministry of Health of Egypt had reported two new confirmed human cases of avian influenza A(H5N1).

The first case is a 13 year-old male from Alexandria Governorate. His symptoms started on 13 September. He was admitted to hospital on 14 September, where he received oseltamivir treatment. The patient is in a stable condition. The second case is a a 14 month old female from Tahrer District, Behira Governorate. Her symptoms started on 23 September. She was admitted to Damanhur Fever Hospital where she received oseltamivir treatment. The patient is in a stable condition. Investigations into the source of infection indicated that both cases had close contact with dead and/or sick poultry. The cases were confirmed by the Egyptian Central Public Health Laboratories.

Avian influenza situation in Egypt - 31 August 2009

On 31 August 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that the Ministry of Health of Egypt had reported two new confirmed human cases of avian influenza A(H5N1).

The first case is a 2 year-old female from Menofyia Governorate. Her symptoms started on 23 August. She was admitted to a fever hospital on 26 August, where she received oseltamivir treatment. The patient is in a stable condition. The second case is an 14 year-old female from Damitta Governorate. Her symptoms started on 21 August. She was admitted to a fever hospital on 23 August, where she received oseltamivir treatment, and is in a stable condition. Investigations into the source of infection indicated that both cases had close contact with dead and/or sick poultry. The cases were confirmed by the Egyptian Central Public Health Laboratories.

Avian influenza situation in Egypt - 11 August 2009

On 11 August 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that the Ministry of Health of Egypt had reported two new confirmed human cases of avian influenza A(H5N1).

The first case is a 8 year old female from Kfr Governorate. Her symptoms started on 24 July 2009. She was admitted to Kfr Elsheikh fever hospital on 25 July, where she received oseltamivir treatment. The patient is in a stable condition. The second case is an 18 month-old male from Shebin Elkom district, Menofyia Governorate. His symptoms started on 28 July 2009. He was admitted to Shebin Elkom fever hospital on 29 July 2009, where he received oseltamivir treatment, and is in a stable condition.

Investigations into the source of infection indicated that both cases had close contact with dead and/or sick poultry.

Avian influenza situation in Egypt - 01 July 2009

On 01 July 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that the Ministry of Health of Egypt had reported three new confirmed human cases of avian influenza A/H5N1.

The first case is a 1-year old male from Domiat Governorate. His symptoms started on 1 June 2009. He was admitted to hospital on 2 June, where he received oseltamivir treatment. The patient has recovered and was discharged on 9 June. The second case is a 4-year old female from Dakhlia Governorate. Her symptoms started on 5 June 2009. She was admitted to hospital on 6 June, where she received oseltamivir treatment. The patient has recovered and was discharged on 14 June. The third case is a 1-year old male from Kaleen District, Kefr El Sheikh Governorate. His symptoms started on 15 June 2009. He was admitted to Kefr El Sheikh Fever Hospital on 16 June 2009, where he received oseltamivir treatment, and is in a stable condition.

Investigations into the source of infection indicated that all three cases had close contact with dead and/or sick poultry. The cases were confirmed by the Egyptian Central Public Health Laboratories.

Avian influenza situation in Egypt - 02 June 2009

On 02 June 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that the Ministry of Health of Egypt had reported a new confirmed human case of avian influenza A/H5N1 on 01 June 2009. The case is a 4-year old female child from the Kefr El Sheikh District of Kefr El Sheikh Governorate. Her symptoms started on 30 May 2009 with fever, cough and sore throat. She was admitted to Kefr El Sheikh Fever Hospital on 31 May 2009. The patient received oseltamivir and is in a stable condition. Investigations into the source of infection indicated that she had close contact with dead and sick poultry. The case was confirmed by the Egyptian Central Public Health Laboratories.

Avian influenza situation in Egypt - 01 June 2009

On 01 June 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that the Ministry of Health of Egypt had reported a new confirmed human case of avian influenza. The case is a 14-month old girl from Dekernes District, Dkhalia Governorate. Her symptoms began on 25 May 2009. She was admitted to Mansoura Chest Hospital on 29 May where she received oseltamivir and is in a stable condition. Investigations into the source of infection indicated that she had close contact with dead and sick poultry. The case was confirmed by the Egyptian Central Public Health Laboratories.

Avian influenza situation in Egypt - 28 May 2009

On 28 May 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that the Ministry of Health of Egypt had reported two new confirmed human cases of avian influenza on 26 May 2009. The two cases are from two separate districts of Sharkia Governorate. The first case is a 4-year old male from Hehia City, Hehia District. His symptoms began with fever on 24 May 2009. The second case is a 4-year old female from Abo Hammad District. Her symptoms began with fever on 23 May 2009. Both cases were admitted to Zagazig Fever Hospital where they received oseltamivir and are in a stable condition.

Avian influenza situation in Egypt - 26 May 2009

On 22 May 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that between 13 to 20 May, the Ministry of Health of Egypt reported five new confirmed human case of avian influenza.

The first case is a 4-year old boy from Kafr Sakr District, Sharkia Governorate. His symptoms began on 10 May 2009 and he was admitted to Zagazig Fever Hospital on 11 May. He is in a stable condition. The second case is a 3-year old boy from Mahalla District, Gharbia Governorate. His symptoms began on 12 May and he was admitted to Mahalla Fever Hospital on 15 May 2009. He is in a stable condition. The third case was a 4-year old girl from Meet Ghamr District, Dakahlia Governorate. Her symptoms began on 9 May 2009 and she was admitted to Mansoura Chest Hospital on 17 May 2009. She died on 18 May 2009. The fourth case is a 4-year old boy from Sherbin District, Dakahlia Governorate. His symptoms began on 18 May 2009 and he was admitted to Mansoura Chest Hospital on the same day. He is in a stable condition. The fifth case is a 3-year old boy from Sohag District, Sohag Governorate. His symptoms began on 17 May 2009 and he was admitted to Sohag Fever Hospital on 18 May 2009. He is in a stable condition.

Investigations into the source of infection indicated that all the above cases had close contact with dead and sick poultry. All five cases have been confirmed by the Egyptian Central Public Health Laboratory.

Avian influenza situation in Egypt - 16 May 2009

On 15 May 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that the Ministry of Health of Egypt had reported a new confirmed case of human infection with the H5N1 avian influenza virus. The case is a 5-year old female from Tama District, Sohag Governorate. Her symptoms began on 7 May and she was admitted in Sohag Fever Hospital on 9 May where she received oseltamivir. She is in a stable condition. The Ministry of Health of Egypt has announced the deaths of previously confirmed cases of H5N1 as follows: 6-year-old male from Qaliobia Governorate; 33-year-old female from Kfr El Sheikh Governorate 25-year-old female from Cairo Governorate.

Avian influenza situation in Egypt - 07 May 2009

On 06 May 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that the Ministry of Health of Egypt had reported a new confirmed case of human infection with the H5N1 avian influenza virus. The case is a 34 year old female from Tanta District, Gharbia Governorate. Her symptoms began on 21 April and she was hospitalized at Tanta Fever Hospital on 21 April where she was started on oseltamivir. She is in a stable condition. Investigations into the source of his infection indicate a history of close contact with dead and sick poultry prior to becoming ill.

Avian influenza situation in Viet Nam - 07 May 2009

On 06 May 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that the Ministry of Health in Viet Nam had reported a new confirmed case of human infection with the H5N1 avian influenza virus. The case is a 23 year old woman from Quan Hoa District, Thanh Hoa Province. She developed symptoms on 16 April, was hospitalized on 21 April, and died on 22 April. Investigation into the source of infection indicated poultry died of influenza A/(H5N1) around her household.

The case is a 4 year old male from Akhmim District, Sohag Governorate. His symptoms began on 18 April and he was hospitalized at Sohag Fever Hospital on 18 April where he was started on oseltamivir. Avian influenza situation in Egypt - 21 April 2009

On 21 April 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that the Ministry of Health of Egypt had reported two new confirmed cases of human infection with the H5N1 avian influenza virus. The first case is a 25-year old pregnant female from El Marg District, Cairo Governorate. Her symptoms began on 6 April and she was hospitalized at Ain Shams University hospital on 11 April where she was started on oseltamivir on 16 April. She is in a critical condition. Investigations into the source of her infection indicated close contact with sick poultry prior to becoming ill. The second case is 18-month old female from Kellin District, Kafr Elsheikh Governorate. Her symptoms began on 15 April and she was hospitalized at Kafr Elsheikh Fever Hospital on 18 April where she was started on oseltamivir on the same day of hospitalization. Her condition is stable. Investigations into the source of infection indicated close contact with dead and sick poultry prior to becoming ill.

Avian influenza situation in Egypt - 17 April 2009

On 17 April 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that the Ministry of Health of Egypt had reported a new confirmed case of human infection with the H5N1 avian influenza virus. The case is a 33 year old female from Kellin district, Kfr El Sheikh Governorate. Her symptoms began on 7 April and she was hospitalized at Kfr El Sheikh Fever Hospital on 15 April where she was started on oseltamivir the same day (15 April). She is in a critical condition. Investigations into the source of her infection indicate a history of close contact with dead and sick poultry prior to becoming ill.

Avian influenza situation in Egypt - 08 April 2009

On 08 April 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that the Ministry of Health of Egypt had reported 3 new confirmed cases of human infection with the H5N1 avian influenza virus.

The first case is a 2 year-old boy from Kom Hamada District, El Behira Governorate. He developed symptoms on 27 March and was admitted to Naaora Fever Hospital on the 30 March where he was started on oseltamivir the same day (30 March). He remains in a stable condition.

The second case is also a 2 year-old boy from the same district and was detected through the investigation around the above-mentioned case. He developed symptoms on 31 March and was admitted to Damanhor Fever Hospital on 1 April where he was started on oseltamivir the same day (1 April ). He remains in a stable condition.

Both boys had contact with sick/dead poultry prior to the illness onset. Close contacts of both boys have been identified and none has shown symptoms of the infection.

The third case is a 6 year-old boy from Shubra El Khema District, Qaliobia Governorate. He developed symptoms on 22 March and was admitted to Ain Shams University Hospital on the 28 March where he was started on oseltamivir on 3 April. He was exposed to sick/dead poultry prior to the illness onset. He is in a critical condition.

Avian influenza situation in Viet Nam - 08 April 2009

On 08 April 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that the Ministry of Health in Viet Nam had reported a new confirmed case of human infection with the H5N1 avian influenza virus. The case is a 3 year old boy from Chau Thanh District, Dong Thap Province. He developed symptoms on 12 March, was hospitalized on 13 March, and died on 19 March. Investigations into the source of infection indicated a history of close contact with sick and dead poultry prior to the onset of symptoms.

Avian influenza situation in Egypt - 30 March 2009

On 30 March 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that the Ministry of Health and Population of Egypt had reported a new human case of the H5N1 avian influenza. This case is a two and a half year old female from Qena District, Qena Governorate. Her symptoms began on 23 March. She was admitted to Qena Fever Hospital on 24 March where she was started on oseltamivir the same day (24 March) and remains in a stable condition. Investigations into the source of infection indicate a history of close contact with dead and sick poultry prior to becoming ill.

Avian influenza situation in Egypt - 23 March 2009

On 23 March 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that the Ministry of Health and Population of Egypt had reported a new human case of the H5N1 avian influenza. This case is a 38-year old female from Elfath District, Assiut Governorate. Her symptoms started with a fever and headache on March 14. She was admitted to Assiut Fever Hospital on March 14 where she was started on oseltamivir the same day (March 14) and remains in a stable condition.Investigations into the source of her infection indicate a history of close contact with dead and sick poultry prior to becoming ill.

On 11 March 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that the Ministry of Health and Population of Egypt had reported a new human case of the H5N1 avian influenza. This case is a one and a half year old female from Menofia Governorate. Her symptoms began on 6 March and she was hospitalized on 9 March where she remains in a stable condition. This case is a two and a half year old male from Amaria District, Alexandria Governorate. His symptoms began on 3 March and he was hospitalized at Alexandria Fever Hospital where he remains in a stable condition. Low pathogenic H6N1 confirmed in poultry in the East of England - 05 March 2009

On 05 March 2009, the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) reported that further laboratory tests had now confirmed that the H6N1 avian influenza virus present at two poultry premises in the East of England is of low pathogenicity. Avian influenza situation in Egypt - 02 March 2009

On 02 March 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that the Ministry of Health and Population of Egypt had reported a new human case of the H5N1 avian influenza on 1 March 2009. This case is a two-year old male from Yousef el seddik district of Fayoum Governorate whose symptoms began on 25 February. He was hospitalized on 28 February and is currently in a critical condition. Investigations into the source of infection indicate a history of close contact with dead and sick poultry prior to becoming ill.

Avian influenza A (H6N1) in poultry in the East of England - 27 February 2009

On 26 February 2009, the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) confirmed avian influenza infection in poultry on two premises in the East of England, and on 27 February Defra confirmed that it was an avian influenza A (H6N1) virus. Avian influenza situation in Viet Nam - 27 February 2009

On 27 February 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that the Ministry of Health in Viet Nam had announced the death of a previously confirmed case of H5N1 infection. The 32 year old male from Kim Son district, Ninh Binh Province died on 25 February.

Avian influenza situation in Viet Nam - 24 February 2009

On 24 February 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that the Ministry of Health in Viet Nam had announced the death of a previously confirmed case of H5N1 infection. The 23 year old female from Dam Ha District, Quang Ninh Province died on 21 February.

On 11 February 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that the Ministry of Health in Viet Nam had reported a new case of human infection with the H5N1 avian influenza virus.

The case is a 23-year old woman from Dam Ha district, Quang Ninh province. She developed symptoms on 28 January 2009 and was hospitalized on 31 January 2009. She is currently in a serious condition and is known to have had recent contact with sick and dead poultry prior to the onset of her illness.

Avian influenza situation in Egypt - 09 February 2009

On 09 February 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that the Ministry of Health and Population of Egypt had announced a new human case of avian influenza A(H5N1) virus infection. The case is a one and a half year old male from the Maghagha District of Menia Governorate. His symptoms began on 6 February and he was hospitalized at the Maghagha Fever Hospital on 7 February where he remains in a stable condition. Investigations into the source of his infection indicate a history of close contact with dead poultry prior to becoming ill.

On 05 February 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that the Ministry of Health and Population of Egypt had announced a new human case of avian influenza A(H5N1) virus infection. The case is a 21-year-old female from Xupu County, Hunan province. She had onset of symptoms on 23 January and remains in hospital in a clinically stable condition. On 27 January 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that the Ministry of Health in China had announced three new human cases of H5N1 infection. The first, a 31-year-old female from Urumqi, Xinjiang had onset of symptoms on 10 January. She received treatment in hospital but died on 23 January. Investigations into the possible source of her infection indicate recent visits to a live poultry market.

The second case is a 29-year-old male from Guiyang city, Guizhou. He had onset of symptoms on 15 January and remains in a critical condition. Investigations into the source of his infection indicate possible exposure at poultry market.

The third case is an 18-year-old male from Beiliu City, Guangxi Province. He had onset of symptoms on 19 January and died on 26 January. Investigations into the source of his infection indicate a recent history of exposure to sick and dead poultry.

Avian influenza situation in Indonesia - 22 January 2009

On 22 January 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that the Ministry of Health of Indonesia had announced two new confirmed cases of human infection with the H5N1 avian influenza virus. A 29-year-old female from Tangerang District, Banten Province developed symptoms on 11 December 2008, was hospitalized on 13 December and died on 16 December. The second case, a 5-year-old female from Bekasi City, West Java Province developed symptoms on 23 December 2008, was hospitalized on 27 Dec 2008 and died on 2 January 2009.

On 19 January 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that the Ministry of Health in China had reported 3 new cases of human infection with the H5N1 avian influenza virus.

The first case is a 27 year old female from Jinan City, Shandong Province. She developed symptoms on 5 January, was hospitalized, and died on 17 January.

The second case is a 2 year old female from Luliang City, Shanxi Province. She developed symptoms on 7 January, was hospitalized, and is in a critical condition.

The third case is a 16 year old male from Huaihua City, Hunan Province. He developed symptoms on 8 January, was hospitalized on 16 January, and is in a critical condition. This case had exposure to sick and dead poultry but the exposure history for the first two cases are still under investigation.

On 07 January 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that the Ministry of Health in China had reported a new case of human infection with the H5N1 avian influenza virus. The case is a 19-year old female from Chaoyang District, Beijing. She developed symptoms on 24 Dec 2008, was hospitalized, and died on 5 January 2009. The case was confirmed by the national laboratory. The case had contact with poultry prior to her illness.
