This annual report summarises statistics for 2008-2009 collected through the national mandatory surveillance scheme for healthcare associated infections (HCAIs) in England. Highlights include dramatic decreases in HCAIs reported through the mandatory surveillance scheme including a reduction in Surgical Site Infections in orthopaedic surgery; the launch of norovirus surveillance in December 2008; the growth of the Clostridium difficile Ribotyping Network (CDRN); and the successful launch of the DVD An introduction to infection control in care homes. More indepth information and surveillance data are published on the HPA website and in peer reviewed journals but we hope this more concise report will appeal to busy chief executives.
