This report summarises data collected by NHS trusts in England over the six year period since surveillance of surgical site infection (SSI) following orthopaedic surgery became mandatory in April 2004.
The Surgical Site Infection Surveillance Service (SSISS) has been collecting SSI data from participating hospitals since 1997 in order to establish a national database and to make available valid comparative data based on standard definitions and follow-up methods.
