Mycoplasma pneumoniae

Mycoplasma pneumoniae is a bacterium that causes acute respiratory illness ranging in severity from mild respiratory illness to severe pneumonia. Epidemics usually occur at intervals of about four years and last for about 12 to 15 months. The last epidemic began in late 1997 and continued into early 1999. Since this time, the rise in reported infections has been lower than expected, and has not followed the previously observed four-yearly epidemic cycle.
